Introduction

As a Ph.D. student in Geography at the University of Kentucky, I have done considerable research on various social groups in Lexington. Unfortunately, the history texts and guide books to Lexington are mostly written by, for, and from the perspectives of the dominant group in Lexington: wealthy whites ...and especially wealthy, white, heterosexual men.

Until recently there has been very little information available on groups such as working class women and African-Americans. Except for brief references in contemporary guide books, several articles in the local gay press, and several scandal books, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered Lexingtonians are missing from the tales of this city.

This web site and the related Afro-Lex (Historical Geographies of African-Americans in Lexington Home Page)(under construction) are attempts to provide a feel for several of the less acknowledged threads that make up the tapestry of Lexington life.
