It looks like several copies of each icon are drawn at slightly different horizontal offsets. Once I figure out how to convert .xdm files into .jpg or .gif, I'll put a picture up showing what I mean.

A simple way to recover is to select "Log out" from the main system menu and then click the "no" button. The dimming and brightening process fixes things.
