Genesis Window Heater

The window on the Genesis camera can fog on nights of high relative humidity. This is fatal for a night of imaging once the window is cold enough to fog. Nothing except a continuous low level of heat will stop it. A hair dryer will work for only 15minutes per shot. Other Genesis users have made ingenious heaters using automotive rear window defogger repair paint. I tried this but couldn't quite pull it off. Here is what I did instead.

I made a continuous ring of four120ohm 3watt resistors which are secured to the camera face with copper tape. The power is fed at two points 180 deg apart so that the net resistance is 120ohms. At 13.8v this supplies 1.6w of heat which seems to be about right. The camera doesn't feel perceptibly warm, but it doesn't fog either.

In this view you can see the copper tape leading from under the T-mount ring. It is painted black. The gobs of gray junk are JB Weld epoxy which cover the solder joints and keep the power cord from pulling the tape loose.

This is ugly, but works. If I ever have a better solution a little acetone will remove all traces of this abomination.

Sometimes you have a choice between pretty equipment or pretty images.
