The Fear of Dressing Up- a short story piece
The girl stood outside staring
up at the flight of stairs that led inside the large brick building. She was
frozen under the hot summer sun. Dressed up in a new dress and heels and exhibiting
a desperate attempt to apply make-up; she had never felt so ugly in her entire
life.
"What are you waiting for?" a voice asked from behind.
The girl turned around to see the boy standing behind her, almost entertained
by her new appearance. She stood speechless.
"What’s wrong with you? It’s just a bunch of stupid girls in there.
Are you scared?" he asked sarcastically.
"I…I don’t think I can do this." She said softly.
"What’s wrong with you?" the boy asked as he stood up beside his
friend. The girl shook her head but said nothing; unable to find the words to
admit she was so frightened to be judged by a bunch of girls who knew she did
not fit in.
"Why can’t you just go inside, get it over with?"
"I just can’t…" the girl shrugged.
"Why?"
"Because i'm not like
them!" the girl cried.
"Who cares? They’re just stuck up, prissy girls!"
"No, I mean…I mean I’ll never be like any girl." She felt stupid
for caring but couldn’t ignore the fact that she did.
