The roots of Kentucky Partners in Dance Alliance, Inc. began
with the first interest in dance education at the University
of Kentucky in 1939. An innovative, young dance teacher, Mary
King Montgomery Kouns, brought modern dance to the University
after studying with Hanya Holm, one of the early pioneers
in modern dance.
A modern dance honorary, Tau Sigmaof Orchesis, was formed
for gifted dance students. A modern dance concert under the
auspices of Tau Sigma was performed in May 1939. This dance
tradition has survived and evolved to include a Dance Minor
at the University of Kentucky. The current dance group is
the U. K. Dance Ensemble, which performs two concerts annually
at the Singletary Center for the Arts on campus.
The establishment of a Dance Major at the University of Kentucky
is in the wings. This Dance Major would prepare certified
dance teachers for the many areas of the state where competent
dance educators are needed. For example, state high school
graduation requirements in the Arts and Humanities require
students to have one complete credit in fine arts. Dance education
is an acceptable and exciting way to fulfill this need but
qualified dance educators are needed to provide this important
part of the curriculum
In addition, many forward-thinking educators and parents
want dance education in their school's curriculum because
it enhances self-expression, develops creativity, and encourages
self-discipline.
