Annoying Pop-Music

Mood: grumpy
Listening to: White Noise

While the narcisistic entertainment media fawns over Madonna's return to her "disco" roots... I can't help noticing that:

A. It's not disco... nor was Madonna's music ever disco.

and

B. The new single on the radio sounds like a massive rip-off of a certain Erasure track from the mid 80s. More than a little actually...

I just wish she'd give up and go away.

the whole album is a conglomeration of old disco and 80's samples. i wouldnt call it innovative or original, all it is really doing, is the same thing the artists of the time did - sample, and recreate from a sample. i dont know the erasure tune you mean, but the single is hung up, which samples an abba song - gimmie gimmie gimmie (i didnt know that until i read the article below) and by samples, i mean rips off. blatantly.

Thank you Chad! "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" was Erasure's cover of that ABBA track. If memory will now serve me faithfully, it was the B-side to Oh L'Amour (A synthed-up version of ABBA's song for the gay club scene. Part of the duo's fascination with all things ABBA-esque.) You're right, it's unfair to catagorize Hung Up as sampling. According to law, a sample is part of a unique creation not a rip off. Some attempts are valid and some are not. Vanilla Ice can probably tell you the difference. That "sample" is ridiculously long and permeates the track. She's just singing over a hook... a la Ice Ice Baby over Queen & Bowie. Maybe that's the difference... a hook vs a sample? I hope she at least gave credit where credit is due...

ive actually gone back and listened to the abba track, and it sounds like she just sampled the hook, and looped the hell out of it. personally i like the end result. its by no means new or inovative, but its purely dancefloor music imo. at least it isnt a butchering of a song like "future lovers" which samples giorgio moroder (donna summer) and treats it pretty poorly.

as for sampling law... there are a lot of perspectives on that, i happen to like negativland and evolution control commitee's views...
