We're off to Maryland!

Oakland -Outdoors

This weekend is Autumn Glory in Oakland, Maryland! Oakland is the county seat of Garret County (home to Deep Creek Lake) and the site of a quaint festival every year dedicated to the changing of the season. This event is timed to coincide with the change in leaf color, which is a spectacular site as you can see from the images on their site. Maryland extends its western arm into the Apalachian Mountains in Garret county and the mountains really enhance the sight of the changing trees.

Western Maryland is a family tradition more than anything. My grandparents and great-grandparents have been spending their summers in one of the small towns surrounding Oakland since the early 1900s. While no one just moves to the mountains for the summer anymore (airconditioning made that unnecessary,) Oakland is still a favorite family destination for several yearly events and home to an old victorian house left to my parents, and my aunts & uncles by their parents. I'm not taking a computer with me so, there will be no new posts until Monday or Tuesday... at which time I should have some photos from the trip to post. Hopefully we won't get too much of the rain we've been having here... though I was just interrupted by a call from my dad who arrived there yesterday and wanted to make sure I brought warm clothes and... boots... Can you guess? Yep, they are expecting their fist snow flurries this weekend... Current Oakland temperature at 9:45AM: 50F

Autumn Glory, and Oakland in general, have been steadily getting larger and larger since I was a very little boy. As you can see from the pictures of the festival, the small sleepy town of Oakland is besieged by tourists every year at this time. The Summer is dominated by the Lake Communities, Winter by the Wisp ski resort and Autumn is all about Oakland.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
